I was sorry to find out today that Hurricane Mo's is for sale and Red Drum has been on the market for a couple of months now. I know these last two years have been tough times for them all.

For Hurricane Mo’s I think it is just that the owners recently had a baby and want to focus on family and spend some time away from OBX. Their business seems to be going well in terms of number of diners. I hope someone buys it and keeps it largely the same.

I've heard comments on how rentals are not profit makers but never heard any discussion on profit or loss from running a restaurant at the obx. Curious as to how that stacks up.

90% of homes do not make a positive cash flow. I am not sure how restaurants do but I am told it is a tough business to make money, things must go your way. I know two places that went from dine in to take out only and both have no plans to go back to dine in because they make more $$$ with take out. I assume the reduced labor is a factor. I have always said the places that close in the winter are the places that are making a good profit and can afford to close a few months. As we know there are only a few that do it regularly (many did last year because of covid).

It's labor. You can't find anyone to work. Then when you do it's a dumpster fire of issues for those that do want to work.

$15/hr is the new normal.

If you want a dedicated employee, well $20-$25 per hour is what it will take.

Sorry, most are not worth $15 per hr. If I order unsweet tea, and ask for sweetener and after I drive off discover that you gave me packets of sugar. So decide to drink without sweet n low only to discover that you gave me sweet tea. My fries are cold and I'm missing a burger. Don't think so. My total is $14.10 so I give you a ten a five and a dime and you hand me 4 quarters and 2 nickles back. After telling me I gave you too much.???

If you are inclined to tip at the drive thru window at a fastfood then indulge yourself.

I hate to hear this about the Red Drum. Their fried flounder is excellent. Perhaps the new owners will make only minimal changes.

I've had a lot of friends in the restaurant business (workers, not owners) and drinking and smoking weed are prerequisites.

Just because it is for sale does not mean there are or will be new owners anytime soon. Those places can take years to sell if they sell at all.

And if the new norm is $15.00/Hour, but decent servers command $20-25.00/Hour, get used to carry out eating.
Some top notch servers in classy establishments have to remember the orders for parties of six, without writing anything down, they could be worth 45K a year but they probably make 6 figures with tips anyway.

I used to have a partner 10+ years ago. His BIL was a waiter at the Capital Grille, in Philly. He was making well over $100k back then.

I tip the same for take out as I do for dine in. Someone still had to prepare the meal and I choose to show my appreciation. The generalization that restaurant workers are sub human is nonsense. Besides, most of you are here for a week, we live here and don't feel entitled to a 5 star experience especially now. I would never lower myself to tip poorly. Anyone can have a bad day.

OK who do you tip? The first window taking your money? The second window that gives you your food. The person that brings out your food after they tell you to pull up and wait? The one flipping burgers? The one on the fries? ETC ETC

a

Take out from a restaurant is usually brought out to you or you go inside and pick it up. (I am not referring to fast food). So, whoever hands me the food is the one that I tip. There is nothing wrong with tipping at a fast food place and I would give it to the server at the second window. Hey, I don't care what you or others do or don't do or think or don't think, in a world where you can be anything...be kind and generous. Or eat at home and cook for yourself.
